A2/A2 is one of the most searched-for terms in family milk cow listings, but it is often used without much explanation.
What A2/A2 means
A2 status refers to genetic variants of beta-casein, one of the proteins found in cow's milk. A cow reported as A2/A2 has two A2 beta-casein alleles on the laboratory test used to genotype her. A cow may also test A1/A2 or for other beta-casein variants depending on the laboratory panel.
What should be verified
If A2 status is important to a buyer, the strongest documentation is a laboratory result that can be tied to the individual animal through a name, registration number, tag, tattoo, microchip or other identifying information.
On a Clover Croft listing, an A2 verification designation is intended to mean that the stated laboratory documentation was reviewed and matched to the animal information provided. It does not mean Clover Croft performed the genetic test itself unless a listing specifically says otherwise.
What A2/A2 does not tell you
An A2/A2 result does not tell you whether the cow is healthy, pregnant, easy to milk, free from mastitis, suitable for your management system or capable of a particular level of future milk production. Those are separate questions.
It also should not be treated as a blanket medical or nutritional claim about the milk. Research and consumer interest around beta-casein variants continue, but a genotype label by itself is not a diagnosis, treatment or guarantee of a health outcome.
Why buyers still care
Some families specifically prefer to purchase an A2/A2 cow, and knowing the genotype before purchase can matter for breeding decisions. For sellers, having a documented result removes uncertainty and makes the listing more transparent.
What to look for on a listing
- The reported genotype, such as A2/A2
- The laboratory or testing provider when available
- The date of the result
- Animal identification that connects the result to the listed cow
- A copy or image of the original record when the seller chooses to provide it
